# How prop firm payouts work

> Once a funded account is in profit and meets the firm’s payout rules — a minimum amount, a waiting period or number of winning days, and sometimes a consistency rule — you request a withdrawal. The firm reviews your trades, applies your profit split and pays by bank transfer, crypto or a payments platform, usually within a few business days.

## The payout rules

Every firm sets conditions a funded account must meet before it can pay. They are separate from the loss limits, and just as important.

- **Payout cycle.** How often you may request: on demand, weekly, every 14 days or monthly. See [payout frequency](https://propfirmpal.com/glossary/payout-frequency).
- **First payout wait.** Many firms make the first payout wait longer than later ones — see [first payout](https://propfirmpal.com/glossary/first-payout).
- **Winning days.** Some futures firms require a number of profitable days per cycle. Topstep’s [payout policy](https://help.topstep.com/en/articles/8284233-topstep-payout-policy), for example, requires five winning days of $150 or more before each payout.
- **Minimum and cap.** A [minimum payout](https://propfirmpal.com/glossary/minimum-payout) and often a [payout cap](https://propfirmpal.com/glossary/payout-cap) per request or a share of the balance.
- **Buffer.** Some firms require profit held above the starting balance after the withdrawal — see [buffer](https://propfirmpal.com/glossary/buffer).
- **Consistency rule.** A limit on how much of the cycle’s profit one day may contribute — see [consistency rule](https://propfirmpal.com/glossary/consistency-rule).

## Frequency and speed

Published cycles vary. On our [payouts hub](https://propfirmpal.com/payouts), the frequencies firms publish include bi-weekly, every 14 days, every 14 or 30 days, and payout on demand. An [on-demand payout](https://propfirmpal.com/glossary/payout-frequency) means you may request whenever the account meets the other rules, rather than on a fixed date.

Processing time is separate from frequency: it runs from approval to money received, and depends on the method. Topstep, for instance, lists ACH at one to three business days and wire/SWIFT at five to ten in its payout policy.

## The profit split

You receive your share of the profit withdrawn, not of the account. Across the 23 firms with complete terms in our data, advertised maximum splits run from 75% to 100% with a median of 90%; the top rates usually need a scaling plan or an add-on. The [profit split calculator](https://propfirmpal.com/calculators/profit-split) turns a gross profit into your payout.

## Payout methods

On our [payouts hub](https://propfirmpal.com/payouts), the methods most widely supported by the firms we track are crypto, bank transfer and Rise, followed by Wise and PayPal. Crypto is usually fastest and cheapest to receive but adds exchange and tax record-keeping; bank wires are slowest and can carry fees. Browse firms by method: [crypto](https://propfirmpal.com/payout-methods/crypto), [bank transfer](https://propfirmpal.com/payout-methods/bank-transfer), [Rise](https://propfirmpal.com/payout-methods/rise).

## Why payouts get denied

A [payout denial](https://propfirmpal.com/glossary/payout-denial) usually cites a rule, and the common ones are predictable: a consistency breach, trading during restricted news, holding over a weekend where banned, copy trading or account sharing, exploiting price-feed errors or simulated fills, or using the account from a restricted country or a VPN. Some firms reserve broad discretion in their terms. Read the prohibited-practices section before trading, keep your records, and keep trading the way you did in the evaluation.

## Do prop firms really pay out?

Many established firms do pay, and several publish payout certificates. But no regulator collects payout data, so there is no reliable figure for how many traders are paid, and a firm can stop paying if its sales fall. Look for a long record of payouts across many traders, stable payout rules, and a healthy audience on the [firm health tracker](https://propfirmpal.com/firm-health). Treat a sudden tightening of payout rules as a warning — the [changes log](https://propfirmpal.com/changes) records them.

## Your first payout, step by step

The sequence below is typical; each firm’s dashboard sets the exact steps.

- Confirm the account meets every payout rule — cycle, winning days, minimum, buffer and consistency — before requesting.
- Complete identity verification and any tax form, if the firm has not already asked for them.
- Choose the payout method and check its fees and processing time.
- Submit the request from the dashboard. Some firms restrict trading while a request is pending.
- Wait for the review; the firm may ask questions about specific trades.
- Receive the payment, record it, and note the account’s new balance and drawdown floor.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long do prop firm payouts take?

Usually a few business days after approval, depending on method. Crypto and payments platforms tend to be fastest; international wires slowest.

### How hard is it to get a payout from a prop firm?

Harder than passing: you must stay inside the loss limits while meeting minimums, winning-day and consistency rules, then pass the firm’s review.

### What is an on-demand payout?

A payout you may request whenever the account meets the firm’s other rules, instead of on a fixed schedule.

### How many people get a payout from prop firms?

No reliable industry figure exists; firms are not required to publish payout rates. Treat any quoted percentage without a firm-audited source with caution.

### Do you pay tax on prop firm payouts?

Generally yes. In the US payouts are usually treated as self-employment income. See the prop firm taxes guide, which is general information and not tax advice.
