Futures Position Size Calculator

Pick a contract, set your risk in dollars or as a percentage of the account, and enter your stop in ticks or points. You get the number of contracts that keeps a stopped-out trade inside your risk, using CME tick values for ES, NQ, CL, GC and their micros.

ES: tick size 0.25, tick value $12.50, point value $50.00.

FAQs — Futures Position Sizing

Contracts, ticks and points, and how to size a futures trade against a prop firm drawdown.

How do I calculate futures position size?

Work out your dollar risk (account size × risk %, or a fixed dollar amount), then divide it by what your stop costs on one contract: stop in ticks × tick value. $500 of risk with a 10-point stop on ES (40 ticks × $12.50 = $500 per contract) is 1 contract. The same stop on MES costs $50, so the same risk buys 10 micros.

What are the tick values of ES, NQ, CL and GC?

Per CME Group contract specs: ES moves in 0.25-point ticks worth $12.50 ($50 a point), NQ in 0.25-point ticks worth $5.00 ($20 a point), CL in $0.01 ticks worth $10.00, and GC in $0.10 ticks worth $10.00. The micros (MES, MNQ, MCL, MGC) are one tenth of each.

Why does the calculator round contracts down?

Futures trade in whole contracts, and rounding up would put more than your chosen amount at risk. If the budget allows 2.7 contracts you trade 2, and the calculator shows what 2 actually risks. When the stop is too wide for even one full-size contract, trade the micro instead.

Should I size futures in ticks or points?

Whichever your platform shows you; the calculator converts. One point is 4 ticks on ES, NQ and their micros, 1 tick on YM, 10 ticks on RTY and GC, and 100 ticks on CL. Treasury futures quote in fractions: a ZB tick is 1/32 of a point and a ZN tick is 1/64.

How much should I risk per trade on a futures prop firm account?

Size against the firm's drawdown, not the nominal account size. A 50K evaluation with a $2,000 trailing drawdown gives you $2,000 of real room, so risking $500 a trade means four straight losses end the account. Many traders risk 10–20% of the drawdown per trade, or less, on trailing-drawdown accounts.

What is a proprietary trading firm (prop firm)?

A proprietary trading firm, also known as a prop firm, is a company that provides traders with access to funded trading accounts. Instead of risking your own capital, you trade the firm’s funds and earn a share of the profits. Most prop firms require traders to pass an evaluation or challenge that tests consistency, risk management, and profitability before granting a funded account.

How do prop firm challenges work?

Prop firm challenges are evaluation programs where traders must meet specific profit targets while following strict risk management rules. These rules often include maximum daily drawdown, overall drawdown limits, minimum trading days, and consistency requirements. If you successfully complete the challenge and any verification phase, you can qualify for a funded trading account and receive a profit split.
