How to use these numbers
Profit or loss is ticks moved × tick value × contracts. At a prop firm the same sum runs backwards: divide your drawdown limit by the value of a move to see how much room one contract has. Each contract page does both for you, and the tick values guide explains the arithmetic.
Figures are exchange specifications from CME Group, read 2026-09-22. Which of these contracts a firm lets you trade, and how many, is set by the firm — compare futures prop firms for their rules.
FAQs — futures contracts
Facts checked 2026-09-22 against CME Group contract specifications.
What is a tick value in futures?
The tick value is the dollar amount one minimum price move (one tick) is worth on one contract. It is the tick size multiplied by the contract multiplier: 0.25 index points × $20 = $5.00 on NQ.
How do I work out futures profit and loss?
Multiply the number of ticks the price moved by the tick value and by the number of contracts. A 20-point move on NQ is 80 ticks × $5.00 = $400 per contract.
What is the difference between micro and mini futures?
A micro is one-tenth the size of its E-mini: MNQ is $2 per Nasdaq-100 point against $20 for NQ, and MES is $5 per S&P 500 point against $50 for ES. Both sizes trade the same hours and months.
Where do these contract specifications come from?
Every figure is taken from CME Group’s contract specification pages (or the CME rulebook), and each contract page names its source and the date it was read. These were checked on 2026-09-22.
Why is margin not listed?
Exchange margin changes often and brokers add their own requirements, so any figure would go stale quickly. A prop firm account does not post margin at all: the firm’s drawdown limit and contract limit are what cap the position.

What is a proprietary trading firm (prop firm)?
A proprietary trading firm, also known as a prop firm, is a company that provides traders with access to funded trading accounts. Instead of risking your own capital, you trade the firm’s funds and earn a share of the profits. Most prop firms require traders to pass an evaluation or challenge that tests consistency, risk management, and profitability before granting a funded account.
How do prop firm challenges work?
Prop firm challenges are evaluation programs where traders must meet specific profit targets while following strict risk management rules. These rules often include maximum daily drawdown, overall drawdown limits, minimum trading days, and consistency requirements. If you successfully complete the challenge and any verification phase, you can qualify for a funded trading account and receive a profit split.
