FAQs - Lot Size

Lot sizes for forex, gold and index CFDs, and why contract sizes differ between brokers.

Lot size = dollar risk ÷ (stop distance × value of that distance on one lot). Risking $500 with a 25-pip stop on EUR/USD, where one standard lot is worth $10 a pip, is 500 ÷ (25 × 10) = 2.00 lots. The same formula works for gold and index CFDs; only the value per unit changes.

A standard gold lot is usually 100 troy ounces, so a $1 move in the gold price is worth $100 per lot. Risking $1,000 with a $5 stop is 1,000 ÷ (5 × 100) = 2.00 lots. Some brokers use a different contract size or call a $0.10 or $0.01 move a "pip", so check your broker's contract spec and enter its contract size above.

It varies by broker more than any other instrument. Many brokers set 1 lot to $1 per index point, but $10 and $20 per point are also common, and some use 0.1. The calculator defaults to 1 and lets you change it. Your broker's symbol specification lists it as contract size or value per point.

A pip is measured in the quote currency. On USD/JPY a pip on one standard lot is 1,000 yen, and converting that to dollars means dividing by the USD/JPY rate: at 150 it is $6.67. For EUR/USD the quote currency is already dollars, so a pip is a flat $10 per lot.

Most brokers trade in steps of 0.01 lots, and rounding up would put more than your chosen risk on the trade. The calculator rounds down to the nearest 0.01 and shows the dollars you actually risk at that size.

Prop trading is generally legal in most countries, but the regulatory status of specific prop firms can vary. Some jurisdictions have introduced rules affecting how prop firms operate or market their services. Certain prop firms also restrict access to traders in specific countries. Prop Firm Pal includes restricted country information on individual firm pages so you can quickly check whether a firm is available to traders in your region.

Yes, most prop firms charge a one-time challenge fee to enter an evaluation program. This fee typically ranges from around $50 for smaller account sizes to several hundred dollars for larger funded accounts. The fee covers access to the evaluation environment. If you pass, some firms refund the challenge fee with your first payout. Firms offering free challenges are rare and often compensate by taking a larger profit split or applying stricter conditions.
