FAQs - Trailing Drawdown
How trailing drawdowns move, when they lock, and the difference between end-of-day and intraday.
The drawdown floor sits a fixed dollar amount below your highest balance and follows it up, never down. On a 50K account with a $2,000 trailing drawdown the floor starts at $48,000; close a day at $50,500 and it moves to $48,500; lose $500 the next day and it stays at $48,500. At most futures prop firms it stops trailing once it reaches the starting balance (or starting balance + $100) and stays there.
An end-of-day (EOD) drawdown only moves the floor after the close, based on your closing balance. An intraday drawdown moves it with your highest equity at any moment, open profit included, so a trade that runs +$1,500 and comes back to flat still drags the floor up $1,500. EOD is the more forgiving of the two. At most firms either kind is still enforced in real time: touching the floor intraday fails the account.
It depends on the firm and is published in its rules. Topstep's Maximum Loss Limit and Take Profit Trader's test drawdown stop trailing at the starting balance; Lucid Trading's LucidFlex and Tradeify's funded accounts lock at starting balance + $100, which on a 50K account with a $2,000 drawdown happens once you close at $52,100 or above. Some accounts never lock. Pick a firm preset to load the published rule.
Because a list of daily P&L cannot show what happened during the day. A real account can breach on an intraday dip that recovers by the close, and that still fails it. Treat a day with a small buffer here as a day your account could easily have failed. In intraday mode, enter each day's peak open profit to see how far it dragged the floor.
Size against the buffer to the floor, not the account balance. Early on, a 50K account with a $2,000 trailing drawdown has only $2,000 of real room, and every winning day tightens it until the floor locks. Risking a small fraction of the current buffer per trade (many traders use 10–25%) keeps a normal losing streak from ending the account.

Prop trading is generally legal in most countries, but the regulatory status of specific prop firms can vary. Some jurisdictions have introduced rules affecting how prop firms operate or market their services. Certain prop firms also restrict access to traders in specific countries. Prop Firm Pal includes restricted country information on individual firm pages so you can quickly check whether a firm is available to traders in your region.
Yes, most prop firms charge a one-time challenge fee to enter an evaluation program. This fee typically ranges from around $50 for smaller account sizes to several hundred dollars for larger funded accounts. The fee covers access to the evaluation environment. If you pass, some firms refund the challenge fee with your first payout. Firms offering free challenges are rare and often compensate by taking a larger profit split or applying stricter conditions.
The best prop firm for futures trading will offer access to CME or exchange-listed contracts, clear rules around leverage and contract limits, and a payout structure suitable for high-frequency or systematic futures strategies. Futures prop firms often operate differently from forex-focused ones, with different fee structures and account types. Prop Firm Pal includes futures-focused firms in its comparisons so you can evaluate which programs support your preferred instruments and trading approach.
