Can you make money with a prop firm?
Yes, if your pass rate and payouts outrun the fees. The expected-value maths of a prop firm account, what payouts look like, and the $1,000-a-day question.
Can you really make money with a prop firm?
Yes, but only if what you withdraw exceeds what you spend on evaluations, resets and fees. That depends on your chance of passing, how many payouts a funded account survives, and the profit split. A trader with a tested, low-drawdown strategy can come out ahead; a trader buying repeated attempts usually does not.
About this guide
Updated by the Prop Firm Pal editorial team.
The payouts are real
Funded accounts are usually simulated, but the payouts are real money — FTMO, for instance, describes its funded accounts as demo accounts with fictitious capital and pays rewards from them. The question is not whether money is paid but whether it exceeds what you spend.
The arithmetic
Your return from a prop firm is what you are paid, minus every fee you spend getting and keeping funded accounts. A worked example, with round numbers chosen to illustrate rather than to describe any firm:
- Evaluation: $400 for a $100,000 account, and a one-in-three chance of passing. Expected cost to get funded: about $1,200.
- Funded account: you make 3% before the account ends, withdraw $3,000 of profit at a 90% split, and are paid $2,700.
- Net: roughly +$1,500 over the cycle. At a one-in-five pass rate the cost to get funded rises to $2,000 and the net falls to about +$700; at one in ten it is −$1,300.
What moves the result
Three numbers dominate. Your pass rate, which depends on how well your strategy fits the drawdown rules; how long a funded account survives, which decides how many payouts you collect; and cost, including resets and monthly fees. Discount codes help at the margin — current ones are on the offers page — but a better pass rate helps far more. How much do prop firm traders make?
There is no reliable average. Firms are not required to publish how many traders are paid or how much, and figures on social media are self-selected. What can be said is the ceiling: payouts equal your profit times the split, capped by the firm’s payout limits and the account size. On a $100,000 account at a 90% split, each 1% of profit withdrawn is $900.
Can you make $1,000 a day?
On one $100,000 account at a 90% split, $1,000 a day means about 1.1% profit every trading day — against a typical daily loss limit of a few percent, a return few strategies sustain. Traders who report income on that scale usually run several accounts at once, which multiplies drawdown risk as well. Treat daily-income targets as a reason to size up, which is the most reliable way to lose a funded account.
Who comes out ahead
The traders who profit from prop firms tend to have a strategy with a known edge and shallow drawdowns, trade it with small risk per trade, choose rules that fit it, and treat fees as a business cost. Everyone else is, on average, funding their payouts. Why traders fail prop firm challenges covers the habits that separate the two.
Costs traders forget
The evaluation fee is the visible cost. The others are easy to leave out of the sum:
- Resets and repeat attempts, which usually outnumber passes.
- Monthly evaluation fees at futures firms, for each month an attempt takes.
- Activation fees on passing.
- Data and platform fees, where the firm passes them on.
- Payout fees and currency conversion on each withdrawal.
- Tax on payouts — see prop firm taxes.
FAQs — Can you make money with a prop firm?
Updated 2026-09-24. Sources are linked where each claim is made.
Are prop firms real money?
The trading is usually simulated; the payouts are real money paid to your bank, crypto wallet or payments account.
How much do prop firms pay you?
Your profit split — commonly 80% to 90% — of the profit you withdraw, subject to minimums, caps and payout rules.
Is it possible to make $1,000 a day with a prop firm?
On a single $100,000 account it needs about 1.1% profit a day at a 90% split, which few strategies sustain within daily loss limits. Multiple accounts raise income and risk together.
Is a prop firm worth it?
If your expected payouts exceed your total fees. Estimate your pass rate and the payouts a funded account survives, then compare them with the cost.
Can beginners make money with a prop firm?
It is harder: beginners usually buy more attempts per pass. Practising the strategy until its drawdowns are known, before paying, improves the odds more than any firm choice.
How many payouts does it take to break even on a challenge?
Divide your total fees — every attempt, reset and activation — by your average payout. The challenge ROI calculator does this for your own figures.
Do successful prop traders use several firms?
Some do, to spread the risk of any one firm closing or changing its rules. It multiplies fees and rulebooks to track, so it suits traders who have already passed at least once.

What is a proprietary trading firm (prop firm)?
A proprietary trading firm, also known as a prop firm, is a company that provides traders with access to funded trading accounts. Instead of risking your own capital, you trade the firm’s funds and earn a share of the profits. Most prop firms require traders to pass an evaluation or challenge that tests consistency, risk management, and profitability before granting a funded account.
How do prop firm challenges work?
Prop firm challenges are evaluation programs where traders must meet specific profit targets while following strict risk management rules. These rules often include maximum daily drawdown, overall drawdown limits, minimum trading days, and consistency requirements. If you successfully complete the challenge and any verification phase, you can qualify for a funded trading account and receive a profit split.
