FAQs — Risk to Reward

Risk:reward ratios, breakeven win rates and expectancy, and what they mean for a funded account.

How do you calculate risk to reward?

Risk is the distance from entry to stop, reward is the distance from entry to target, and the ratio is reward ÷ risk. A long at 100 with a stop at 98 and a target at 106 risks 2 to make 6: 1:3, or a 3R trade. The units cancel, so it works the same in pips, ticks, points or dollars.

What win rate do I need to break even?

Breakeven win rate = 1 ÷ (1 + R). At 1:1 you need to win 50% of trades, at 1:2 about 33.3%, at 1:3 exactly 25%. Below that win rate the strategy loses money over time regardless of how good any single trade looks; above it, it makes money before costs.

What is expectancy in trading?

Expectancy is the average result per trade, measured in R. With a win rate p and a reward of R per win, expectancy = p × R − (1 − p). A 40% win rate at 1:2 gives 0.4 × 2 − 0.6 = +0.2R: every trade earns a fifth of what it risks on average. Negative expectancy loses money however you size it.

Is a higher risk to reward ratio always better?

No. Pushing the target further out raises R but usually lowers the win rate, because price reaches a distant target less often. What matters is the pair together: expectancy. A 1:1 strategy that wins 60% of the time (+0.2R) is as good as a 1:3 strategy that wins 30% (+0.2R), and the 1:1 one has far shorter losing streaks, which matters on a prop firm drawdown.

How does risk to reward affect a prop firm challenge?

It sets how many trades you need and how deep your losing streaks run. Higher-R strategies pass with fewer winning trades but suffer longer runs of losses, which a tight daily or trailing drawdown may not survive. Check the streak your win rate implies against the number of losses your drawdown allows before choosing a target.

What is a proprietary trading firm (prop firm)?

A proprietary trading firm, also known as a prop firm, is a company that provides traders with access to funded trading accounts. Instead of risking your own capital, you trade the firm’s funds and earn a share of the profits. Most prop firms require traders to pass an evaluation or challenge that tests consistency, risk management, and profitability before granting a funded account.

How do prop firm challenges work?

Prop firm challenges are evaluation programs where traders must meet specific profit targets while following strict risk management rules. These rules often include maximum daily drawdown, overall drawdown limits, minimum trading days, and consistency requirements. If you successfully complete the challenge and any verification phase, you can qualify for a funded trading account and receive a profit split.
