Futures vs forex prop firms
How futures and forex prop firms differ: exchange-traded contracts vs CFDs, dollar vs percentage drawdown, monthly fees, platforms, US access and payouts.
What is the difference between futures and forex prop firms?
Futures prop firms fund accounts that trade exchange-listed contracts such as ES and NQ on platforms like Tradovate and NinjaTrader, usually with a dollar trailing drawdown and often a monthly fee. Forex prop firms fund CFD accounts on MT5, cTrader or TradeLocker, with percentage limits and a one-time fee, and many exclude US traders.
About this guide

Side by side
The two models grew from different markets and kept different rulebooks. The pattern below holds for most firms in each group; exceptions exist on both sides.
Futures prop firms
Forex / CFD prop firms
Typical patterns, not rules. Compare exact terms on each firm’s page.
What you trade
A futures prop account trades exchange-listed futures, priced by CME Group with fixed tick values: an E-mini S&P 500 tick is $12.50, a Micro E-mini tick $1.25. Position size is a whole number of contracts, and firms cap how many you may hold. Trading follows the exchange clock — see futures trading hours.
A forex prop account trades CFDs priced by the firm’s liquidity or data provider, sized in lots. The same account usually offers currency pairs, index CFDs such as NAS100 and US30, gold and often crypto, with leverage set by the firm. See CFD and lot.
How the rules differ
Futures firms typically set a single-phase evaluation with a dollar target and an end-of-day or intraday trailing drawdown, a daily cut-off by which positions must be flat, and contract limits. Forex firms more often run two phases with percentage targets, a daily loss limit and a static or trailing maximum. Prop firm drawdown types explains why a dollar trailing limit and a percentage static limit trade so differently.
Costs are structured differently too. A monthly futures evaluation can cost less up front and more if it takes several months; a one-time forex fee is fixed but usually larger. Many futures firms add an activation fee at funding.
US traders
In early 2024 MetaQuotes withdrew MetaTrader from prop firms serving US clients, and several forex firms suspended US sign-ups or moved to other platforms. Futures firms, which run on platforms such as Tradovate, NinjaTrader and Rithmic rather than MetaTrader, were not affected by that change. Our United States list shows who currently accepts US residents.
Which to choose
Choose by the market you already trade. An index-futures day trader gains nothing from learning CFD pricing, and a forex swing trader will struggle with a futures firm’s daily flat rule and trailing drawdown. If you trade indices and could do either, compare the drawdown room each gives your strategy and the total cost to your first payout. Start from futures prop firms or forex prop firms.
Trading hours and holding rules
Futures accounts follow the CME Globex schedule, with a daily one-hour break and a weekend close; firms often require positions to be flat before a set time each afternoon and ban holding through the weekend. Forex and CFD accounts follow the broker’s hours, trading 24 hours a day from Sunday evening to Friday evening, and weekend or overnight holding is a firm rule rather than a market one.
That affects strategy fit more than most traders expect. A swing trader who holds for days needs a firm that allows overnight and weekend holding, which is more common on the forex side; an intraday index trader loses little from a daily flat rule. Browse firms that allow overnight holding and weekend holding before choosing.
Costs to a first payout
Compare the full route rather than the evaluation price. On a futures account, add the monthly fee for each month the evaluation takes, any activation fee, and data or platform fees if the firm passes them on. On a forex account, add the one-time fee, any reset you expect to buy, and any add-on you need, such as removing a time limit. The challenge ROI calculator takes these costs and shows the payouts needed to break even.
FAQs — Futures vs forex prop firms
Updated 2026-09-24. Sources are linked where each claim is made.
Are there prop firms for futures trading?
Yes. Futures prop firms fund accounts trading CME contracts such as ES, NQ, crude oil and gold, usually through Tradovate, NinjaTrader, Rithmic or ProjectX.
Are futures prop firms better than forex prop firms?
Neither is better in general. Futures firms suit index and commodity day traders and accept US traders more widely; forex firms suit currency and CFD traders who want percentage limits.
Can US traders use forex prop firms?
Some, but many forex firms restricted US traders after MetaQuotes withdrew MetaTrader from firms serving US clients in 2024. Check each firm’s country list.
Do futures prop firms charge monthly?
Many do, charging a monthly evaluation fee until you pass and sometimes an activation fee at funding. Some offer one-time pricing.
Can you trade futures at a forex prop firm?
Not exchange-listed futures, usually. Forex firms offer index and commodity CFDs such as NAS100, US30 and gold, which track similar markets but are priced by the firm’s provider.
Which is easier to pass, a futures or a forex evaluation?
Neither is easier across the board. Compare the target and drawdown in each against how your strategy trades; the challenge difficulty ranking scores evaluations on that ratio.

A proprietary trading firm, also known as a prop firm, is a company that provides traders with access to funded trading accounts. Most prop firms require traders to pass an evaluation or challenge that tests consistency, risk management, and profitability before granting a funded account.
How do prop firm challenges work?
Prop firm challenges are evaluation programs where traders must meet specific profit targets while following strict risk management rules.
