Prop firm vs broker vs hedge fund
Whose money is traded, who takes the loss, who regulates it: how a retail prop firm differs from a broker, a traditional prop firm and a hedge fund.
What is the difference between a prop firm, a broker and a hedge fund?
A broker executes trades with your own deposited money. A hedge fund invests outside investors’ money for a fee. A traditional prop firm trades only its own capital. A retail prop firm sells evaluations and pays traders a profit share, usually on simulated accounts, so the trader risks only the fee.

Prop firm vs broker
A broker holds your money and routes your orders; you keep all profit and bear all loss. Brokers that handle customer funds are regulated — in the US, futures brokers register with the CFTC and are members of the NFA, searchable on NFA BASIC, and securities brokers are listed on FINRA BrokerCheck.
A retail prop firm holds none of your trading capital. You pay a fee, trade an account the firm provides — usually simulated — and receive a share of the profit. The firm uses brokers or data providers behind the scenes, but you are its customer for the evaluation, not a brokerage client. See broker.
Prop trading vs hedge fund
A hedge fund, as the SEC’s investor site describes it, is a private investment fund that pools money from investors, generally limited to accredited investors, and charges them fees. Its managers trade other people’s money.
Proprietary trading is the opposite: the firm trades only its own capital and keeps the result. No outside investors are involved — and in the US, the Volcker rule keeps banks out of it. A retail prop firm borrows the name but not the model; see what is a prop firm?.
Which path fits which trader
A trader with enough capital and a proven edge keeps the most by trading a broker account. A trader with an edge and little capital can use a retail prop firm to trade larger size with the loss capped at the fee. A trader who wants a career managing money works toward a traditional prop firm or a fund, which hire rather than sell access. How to get a funded trading account covers the routes.
Prop firm vs broker: the cost of the same trade
An illustrative comparison. On a broker account, trading one E-mini S&P 500 contract with a 10-point stop risks $500 of your own money, because each point is worth $50 per contract. To survive a few such losses you need several thousand dollars in the account, all of it at risk.
On a funded futures account the same trade risks $500 of the firm’s simulated balance against a drawdown limit. Your own money at risk is the evaluation and any activation fee. In exchange you give up a share of the profit and accept the firm’s rules — a trade-off that favours the prop firm when capital is scarce and the broker when it is not.
Where traditional prop firms fit today
Traditional proprietary trading firms still exist, trading the firm’s own capital in equities, futures and options. They recruit traders into employment or partnership arrangements, often with training, and may require the trader to register if they trade securities through a broker-dealer. They are rarely what people mean by prop firm online, but they are what the term originally described.
FAQs — Prop firm vs broker vs hedge fund
Updated 2026-09-24. Sources are linked where each claim is made.
Is a prop firm a broker?
No. A broker holds your money and executes your trades. A retail prop firm sells evaluations and pays a profit share on an account it provides.
Is prop trading the same as a hedge fund?
No. A hedge fund trades investors’ money for fees; proprietary trading uses only the firm’s own capital.
Which is better, a prop firm or a broker account?
A broker account keeps all profit but risks your capital. A prop firm caps your loss at the fee and pays a share of profit. Capital and edge decide which fits.
Do prop firms use brokers?
Usually, behind the scenes, for price data or for trades the firm places on its own account. The trader does not open a brokerage account.
Can a retail trader invest in a hedge fund?
Generally only if they meet the accredited investor or qualified purchaser tests, according to the SEC’s investor education site.
What is a prop trading desk?
A team inside a bank or trading firm that trades the institution’s own capital. In the US, the Volcker rule generally prohibits banks from proprietary trading, with limited exceptions.
Is a prop firm safer than a broker account?
Your maximum loss is smaller — the fee rather than your deposit — but a broker account held with a regulated broker has protections for your money that a prop firm fee does not.
