How to get a funded trading account
The three routes to a funded trading account — evaluation, instant funding, and a firm that hires — with what each costs and what approval really requires.
How do you get a funded trading account?
Buy an evaluation from a prop firm and pass it: reach the profit target without breaching the daily loss limit or maximum drawdown. Then complete the firm’s identity check and sign its trader agreement. Alternatively, buy instant funding and skip the test, at a higher price and with tighter rules.
About this guide
Updated by the Prop Firm Pal editorial team.
Route one: pass an evaluation
This is how most traders get funded. There is no application and no interview; approval is the evaluation. You pick a firm and account size, pay the fee and trade under the rules until you hit the target or breach a limit.
- Pick the market first. Futures, forex and CFDs, crypto and stocks are served by different firms with different platforms. See futures vs forex prop firms.
- Pick the rules that fit your strategy. A scalper and a swing trader need different firms. A trailing drawdown suits some styles and ends others; how to choose a prop firm covers the trade-offs.
- Pick a size you can afford to fail. The median price of the cheapest $100,000 evaluation across the 23 firms with full terms in our industry report is $419. Smaller accounts cost less and carry the same percentage rules.
- Trade the plan, not the target. Size every trade so a normal losing streak cannot reach the daily limit. The position size calculator and risk of ruin calculator do the arithmetic.
Route two: instant funding
Most firms also sell a funded account outright — 20 of the 23 firms with complete terms in our data do. There is no profit target to reach before payouts, but the price per $1,000 of funding is several times higher, and the loss limits and payout rules are usually tighter. Instant funding vs evaluation compares the two in detail.
Route three: a firm that hires
Traditional proprietary trading firms hire traders to trade the firm’s own capital through its own brokerage accounts. That is a job, with interviews and often a trading track record, and in the US securities side it can require FINRA registration. It is a different path from the retail firms this site compares, and far fewer places are available.
What “approval” involves after you pass
Passing an evaluation is not the last step. Before the funded account is issued, firms typically require:
- Identity verification (KYC) with a government ID and proof of address.
- A signed trader agreement, which sets out that you are an independent contractor and not an employee.
- Tax paperwork: US traders at US firms usually provide a W-9; non-US traders at US firms usually complete a W-8BEN.
- Sometimes an activation fee, especially at futures firms.
- A review of your evaluation trades for banned practices such as latency arbitrage, account sharing or exploiting simulated fills.
Where you live matters
Firms restrict countries for sanctions, payment and platform reasons. Since MetaQuotes withdrew MetaTrader from prop firms serving US clients in early 2024, many forex firms stopped accepting US traders or moved them to other platforms. Check the firm’s restricted countries before paying, or start from our lists for the United States, the United Kingdom or India.
Qualifications, and what firms do not check
Retail prop firms do not ask for a licence, a degree or a track record. You generally need to be an adult who can pass identity checks from a country the firm serves. That openness is the business model: the evaluation, not the firm, filters traders — which is why preparing for the rules matters more than anything on a CV.
Before you buy: a short preparation list
Preparation costs nothing and removes the most avoidable failures:
- Trade your strategy on a demo or small live account for long enough to know its normal losing streak and worst day.
- Write down the firm’s daily limit, maximum drawdown and conduct rules, and set your per-trade risk so your worst day stays inside the daily limit.
- Check that the firm’s platform, instruments and trading hours match how you trade — and that it accepts residents of your country.
- Decide in advance how many attempts you are willing to pay for, and stop when you reach it.
FAQs — How to get a funded trading account
Updated 2026-09-24. Sources are linked where each claim is made.
How do you get approved for a funded trading account?
By passing the firm’s evaluation, then completing identity verification and signing the trader agreement. There is no separate application at retail prop firms.
What qualifications do you need for funded futures trading?
None formal. Futures prop firms require you to pass their evaluation and verify your identity; trading the live account some firms offer later may involve extra onboarding.
Can you get a funded account without a challenge?
Yes. Instant funding accounts skip the evaluation, but cost more per $1,000 of funding and usually have tighter drawdown and payout rules.
How long does it take to get a funded account?
As long as the evaluation takes you, plus verification. Many firms have no time limit or a minimum of a few trading days; identity checks usually take a few days.
Can you get a funded trading account for free?
Occasionally, through giveaways and competitions. Free trials normally lead nowhere; a funded account from a giveaway is a prize, not a standing offer.
Do you need a trading record to get funded?
Not at a retail prop firm: the evaluation is the record. A traditional proprietary trading firm hiring for a salaried role may ask for one.

Most prop firms require traders to pass an evaluation or challenge that tests consistency, risk management, and profitability before granting a funded account.
