Topstep has one hard rule: never let your balance touch the Maximum Loss Limit. On a $50K account that limit sits $2,000 below your balance. Around it sit a 55% best-day target, a scaling plan that starts you at 2 lots, and payout rules that change your risk the moment you use them. This guide follows one $50K account from the Trading Combine to a first payout. The rules and fees come from Topstep's Help Center as of 6 November 2026. The trades are illustrative.

Topstep rules at a glance
All three standard accounts run the same rules at different sizes. The Combine is a monthly subscription with no deadline, and you can pass in as few as 2 days. Topstep is futures only, so there is no forex, and every position must be flat by 3:10 PM CT.

Passing a $50K Combine, day by day
You pass by reaching $3,000 of profit with no single day above 55% of the target. Here is a five-day run that breaks the best-day line once and still passes.
| Day | Net P&L | Balance | Loss limit | Target needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Start | $50,000 | $48,000 | $3,000 | |
| 1 | +$800 | $50,800 | $48,800 | $3,000 |
| 2 | -$300 | $50,500 | $48,800 | $3,000 |
| 3 | +$1,800 | $52,300 | $50,000 (locked) | $3,273 |
| 4 | +$500 | $52,800 | $50,000 | $3,273 |
| 5 | +$500 | $53,300 | $50,000 | Passed |
Illustrative trades, Topstep's rule arithmetic. P&L is net of commissions, which run $3.78 a round turn on ES and $1.22 on MES.
How the Topstep drawdown rule works
Topstep's drawdown is a trailing limit that moves once a day and is enforced all day. It rises with your end-of-day balance, never falls, and locks for good when it reaches your starting balance. On Day 3 the $2,000 gap would put it at $50,300, so it stops at $50,000. From there your winnings add room.
Enforcement runs on open P&L in real time. Topstep's own example has a trader with a $48,000 limit whose open loss takes the balance to $47,750. The exit fills back at $48,050 and the account is still breached, because the touch came first. Breaching in the Combine ends your day and makes the account ineligible until you buy or apply a Reset. The subscription keeps rebilling meanwhile.
How the 55% consistency target works
Going over the line raises your target and leaves the account open. The sum is best day divided by 0.55, so $1,800 becomes $3,273. Every $1 above $1,650 adds about $1.82 to what you must earn. On Day 5 the check is $1,800 on $3,300, or 54.5%, and that passes.
- A losing day changes nothing. Your best day stays on record even if your total falls.
- You cannot fix it the same session. More profit in that session only enlarges that day's total, which locks as your best day at 3:10 PM CT. Trade the remainder on another day.
- A second big day moves the target again. A later $2,200 day would raise it to $4,000.
For comparison, Alpha Futures sets the line at $1,500 on its Standard 50K evaluation, which has the same $3,000 target.
Topstep scaling plan: contracts by balance
A funded $50K account starts at 2 lots and reaches its full 5 lots only above a $2,000 balance. The Combine's flat 5 contracts do not carry over. Your Express Funded Account (XFA) starts at a $0 balance, because the 50K label is buying power. Topstep publishes these tiers as an image, so here they are as text.
| XFA balance | $50K | $100K | $150K |
|---|---|---|---|
| Below $1,500 | 2 lots | 3 lots | 3 lots |
| $1,500 to $2,000 | 3 lots | 4 lots | 4 lots |
| $2,000 to $3,000 | 5 lots | 5 lots | 5 lots |
| $3,000 to $4,500 | 5 lots | 10 lots | 10 lots |
| Above $4,500 | 5 lots | 10 lots | 15 lots |
From Topstep's Scaling Plan page, read on 6 Nov 2026. One lot is 1 mini or 10 micros. The Live Funded Account uses a separate system.
- Timing: a higher limit applies from the next session, never mid-session.
- Mistakes: going over and correcting it in under 10 seconds is ignored. Longer can trigger a review.
- Tighter products: as of 6 November 2026, CL and GC are capped at 3 minis on a 50K, MGC and MCL at 30 micros, SIL and MHG at 2 micros, and SI, HG and PL at zero. On a 50K XFA below $1,500, CL and GC drop to 1 mini or 12 micros. Topstep changes these with volatility.
Topstep payout rules: Standard or Consistency
Both paths pay 90% of up to 50% of your balance per request, with a $125 minimum. They differ in what opens a request and in the cap. You choose at activation and cannot switch that account later.
Standard path
5 winning days of $150 or more net, which need not be consecutive. After the first payout, you must also be up at least $0.01 since the last one. $50K cap: $2,000.
Consistency path
3 trading days with at least 1 trade each, and your largest day at or below 40% of net profit. $50K cap: $3,000. The count and the calculation restart after each payout.
Three traders, two paths
- Even days of $600, $500 and $400 total $1,500. The largest day is exactly 40%, so Consistency opens on Day 3. The maximum request is $750, and you receive $675.
- Uneven days of $1,500, $200 and $300 total $2,000. The largest day is 75%, so Consistency stays locked until net profit reaches $3,750. Standard needs only two more days of $150.
- Steady days of $120 never count on Standard, because each is under $150. Three of them open Consistency, with a $180 maximum request.
If your best day is usually under 40% of your week, Consistency is faster and has the higher cap. If you make your money in a few large days, Standard asks less of you. A losing day lowers net profit, which makes the 40% test harder.
The Daily Loss Limit can double your cap
The Daily Loss Limit (DLL) is optional, and it is a forced stop for the session. Your positions flatten at -$1,000 on a 50K, you return at 5 PM CT, and the account stays eligible. Since 2 June 2026, a limited-time offer doubles the per-request cap if you add it when you buy the Combine: $4,000 on a 50K Standard and $6,000 on Consistency. As of 6 November 2026, Topstep has announced no end date, so confirm it at checkout. Adding it at XFA activation does not qualify, and a DLL set at checkout cannot be changed later.
The higher cap only matters at a large balance. Because a request is limited to 50% of the balance, you need twice the cap in the account to draw it in full: $4,000 for the normal Standard cap and $8,000 for the doubled one.
Topstep says over 63% of traders have lost an account in a single day. A fixed $1,000 stop on a $2,000 limit makes that harder to do, though a fast market can still fill you past it. Compare the payout terms with other firms on our futures payouts page.
What your first payout changes
Your first payout resets the loss limit to $0 for good and uses up your Back2Funded option. Before that, a $50K XFA's limit starts at -$2,000 and trails your balance. After it, your remaining balance is all the room you have. The table shows what that does to a $50K.
| Balance | Max request | You receive | Room | Lots |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $750 | $375 | $337.50 | $2,000 to $375 | 2 to 2 |
| $2,000 | $1,000 | $900 | $2,000 to $1,000 | 3 to 2 |
| $3,000 | $1,500 | $1,350 | $3,000 to $1,500 | 5 to 3 |
| $4,000 | $2,000 | $1,800 | $4,000 to $2,000 | 5 to 3 |
| $6,000 | $2,000 | $1,800 | $6,000 to $4,000 | 5 to 5 |
A $50K XFA on the Standard path with the normal cap, assuming a steady climb with no down days. Room and lots show before and after the payout; room after equals your new balance. Our arithmetic from Topstep's published rules. ACH and wire payouts also deduct $30.
The first row is the earliest possible Standard payout: five days of exactly $150. You collect $337.50, and your room falls from $2,000 to $375, which is 81% less. On the Standard path you have already paid $198 at list price to get here, assuming one monthly charge plus activation. The next $375 of losses closes the account for good.
We recommend reaching a balance where your MLL is at $0 first.
Topstep, Payout Policy
On a 50K that means a $2,000 balance. Before the first payout, a breach can be undone: Back2Funded buys a reactivation for $599, up to twice per account, within 30 days. Once you have taken a payout, it is gone. You would then need a new Combine.
A reactivated account restarts at a $0 balance with its stats cleared. A new Standard 50K Combine costs $49 a month plus $149 to activate, so on fees alone Back2Funded is cheaper only from the 10th monthly charge of passing again. That falls to the 6th on a 100K and the 4th on a 150K. Each reactivation also comes with $50 off if you add a DLL.
News, hours and banned strategies
You can hold through news, but you cannot open new mini positions in equity index or metals products for 5 minutes either side of a Tier 1 release. On a 50K Combine, micros are capped at 3 for that window. A 50K XFA gets 3 micros above a $2,000 balance and 1 below it.
| Tier 1 event | Release (CT) | Restricted window (CT) |
|---|---|---|
| CPI, PPI, Non-Farm Payrolls | 7:30 AM | 7:25 to 7:35 AM |
| FOMC rate decision | 1:00 PM | 12:55 to 1:05 PM |
| FOMC press conference | 1:30 PM | 1:25 to 1:35 PM |
Existing positions may stay open and closing brackets are accepted, but pending orders will not fill during the window. Energies, rates and FX are unaffected. From Topstep's Risk Adjustments page, read on 6 Nov 2026.
Separately, deliberately trading your full maximum position into a scheduled major release is prohibited, and Topstep makes no adjustment for slippage.
The trading day runs from 5:00 PM CT to 3:10 PM CT the next day. Risk managers start flattening at 3:08 PM, and a trade at 6:30 PM on Tuesday counts as Wednesday. That matters for your best day and your winning-day count.
These conduct rules can catch an ordinary trader:
- Cross-account hedging. Holding opposite positions across accounts is banned, including correlated pairs like MES and ES. A copier error can count. The first time brings a warning and a short window to close, then liquidation. Repeats can permanently close the account with its profits, and confirmed violations cannot be appealed.
- Account stacking. Repeatedly blowing one account and moving to the next to repeat high-risk attempts.
- Price limits. Holding a position within 2% of a product's price limit.
- VPNs and second profiles. Identity-masking services are not permitted, and all your accounts must sit under one profile.
Which Topstep path costs less
The No Activation Fee path wins if you expect few charges, and Standard wins if you expect many. A charge here means a monthly rebill or a paid Reset. A Reset costs the same as the monthly price and pushes your rebill date out 30 days, so it mostly brings the next bill forward. Each rebill also adds 1 Reset credit, and you can use 2 Resets per account per day.
| Account | Standard | No Activation Fee | With DLL | Charges where it is cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $50K | $49 + $149 | $95 | $85 | Up to 3 (4 with DLL) |
| $100K | $99 + $149 | $149 | $129 | Up to 2 (4 with DLL) |
| $150K | $199 + $149 | $229 | $199 | Up to 4 (any with DLL) |
Our arithmetic from Topstep's pricing page, read on 6 Nov 2026, before tax. The DLL column counts monthly rebills, since Topstep lists no discounted Reset price. Standard uses the full $149, as Topstep names a DLL discount on activation without giving the amount.
Topstep suggests No Activation Fee if you expect to pass in 1 or 2 attempts. The sums stretch that on a 50K. The bigger finding is at 150K: if you will accept a DLL, No Activation Fee costs the same $199 a month as Standard with no $149 at the end. You cannot change path after buying, so decide first. Current deals are on our futures offers page, and you can set Topstep against other firms on our compare tool.
The Live call-up and the odds
Few traders reach Live. The Risk Team decides case by case, and if called you either move up or close your XFAs. Topstep publishes these outcomes for January to December 2025.
From Topstep's Risk Disclosure. The figures mix simulated and live trading and do not predict results. As of 6 November 2026, its homepage also states more than $1.5B paid out all time and more than 7,000 traders paid weekly, a year-to-date average.
Live changes the rules again:
- All your XFAs close, and balances above the Live account size are forfeited. In Topstep's example, four 50K XFAs holding $25,000 each become a $50K account, so $50,000 is lost. That leaves $10,000 to trade and $40,000 in Reserve. Balance above that size counts for nothing unless it was paid out before the call-up.
- Reserve comes in steps. 25% is released each time you make the target again, $3,000 on a 50K, with reviews on Mondays.
- A mandatory DLL applies, $2,000 on a 50K. Falling below a $1,000 balance closes the account. The remainder is paid out and any Reserve not yet released is forfeited.
- Payouts open up. The dollar cap goes, with 5 winning days per request and up to 50% of balance. After 30 winning days in Live you can draw daily. XFA days do not count.
- Costs and tools change. Professional data is $133 per exchange a month with 1 covered, and automated strategies are not possible through the API.
- No time limit and a 2-day minimum
- Going over the best-day line raises the target instead of failing you
- $125 minimum payout and a choice of two paths
- Publishes its 2025 outcome statistics
- Funded accounts start at $0 and 2 lots on a 50K
- A first payout permanently removes your cushion and Back2Funded
- The Combine rebills every 30 days, with no pause option
- No overnight holds, and news-window limits on minis
Recent Topstep rule changes
Topstep changes its terms often, so guides age quickly. These dates come from its own pages. Its older website rules page, dated 26 June 2025, still shows some earlier terms, such as a 7-day Back2Funded window. The Help Center is the place to check.
- Reset Credits issued from 11 December expire after 1 year.
- Only traders on the new dashboard before 12 January keep 100% of their first $10,000 in lifetime profits. Others are 90/10 from the start.
- The Back2Funded window grew from 7 to 30 days on 29 May.
- The doubled payout cap for a DLL added at Combine checkout began on 2 June.
- Exchange fees on MCL and MNG rose by $0.10 per side from 1 October.
Topstep rules FAQ
Does Topstep have a trailing drawdown?
Yes. It updates at the end of each day, is enforced in real time on open P&L, and locks at your starting balance. The trailing figure is $2,000, $3,000 or $4,500 by account size. Our trailing drawdown calculator shows how a floor like this moves.
Can you hold trades overnight at Topstep?
No. All positions must be closed by 3:10 PM CT each weekday, including Friday. Products with an earlier close must be exited before it.
Does Topstep's profit carry over after passing?
No. The Combine closes when you pass, and profits do not transfer. Your XFA begins at $0.
How many Topstep accounts can you have?
Up to 5 active XFAs, in any mix of sizes and paths, and any number of Combines. A trade copier can run across your own accounts up to $750K in buying power.
Does Topstep refund the Combine fee?
Generally no. A 14-day guarantee refunds up to 1 monthly payment on a first-ever Combine you have not passed. Resets and Back2Funded are final.
This guide is general information, not financial or tax advice. Topstep can change its rules, so confirm them in its Help Center before you buy.
