How to choose a prop firm
Choose a prop firm by market, drawdown rules, total cost, payout terms, platform and track record. Eight checks, in order, before paying for an evaluation.
How do you choose a prop firm?
Start with the market and platform you already trade, then compare drawdown type and size against your strategy, the total cost to a first payout, payout rules, and the firm’s record of paying. The cheapest or most-advertised firm is rarely the right one; the right one has rules your strategy can survive.
About this guide
Updated by the Prop Firm Pal editorial team.
Eight checks, in order
Each check narrows the list; do them in this order and the last few decide between a handful of firms.
- Market. Futures, forex and CFDs, crypto or stocks — see futures vs forex prop firms.
- Country. Confirm the firm accepts residents of your country before anything else; lists by country start at the United States.
- Platform. Trade on software you already know. Our trading platforms guide lists which firms offer each.
- Drawdown. Type (static, end-of-day, intraday trailing) and size against your strategy’s normal drawdown. See drawdown types.
- Target-to-drawdown ratio. The real measure of difficulty; the challenge difficulty ranking scores every evaluation on it.
- Total cost. Evaluation, activation, resets and monthly fees, against your realistic pass rate. The challenge ROI calculator does the sum.
- Payout terms. Minimum, frequency, split, caps, winning-day and consistency rules — how prop firm payouts work.
- Track record. Payout evidence, age, rule changes and reviews — are prop firms legit?
Read the rules, not the landing page
The details that end accounts are in the rulebook and terms of service, not on the pricing page: whether the daily limit counts open equity, when the trailing drawdown locks, what counts as news trading, whether EAs or copy trading are allowed, and what the firm can do at the payout review. Firms change these often; our rule & price changes log records what changed and when.
Choosing as a beginner
A beginner is better served by forgiving rules than by the biggest account. Look for a static or end-of-day drawdown, no time limit, a small account size, and a low fee — failing cheaply is part of learning. Avoid instant funding until you have passed an evaluation; its tighter rules punish the mistakes beginners make. Read why traders fail prop firm challenges before the first attempt.
Which prop firm has the least rules?
Every firm has loss limits — they are the business. What varies is the conduct rules: some firms have no consistency rule, no minimum trading days, allow news trading and weekend holding, and permit EAs. Fewer rules usually come with a tighter drawdown or a higher price. Filter by what matters to your strategy on the prop firm lists rather than looking for the fewest rules overall.
Using comparisons without being sold to
Most comparison sites, this one included, earn affiliate commission from the firms they list. Weigh a ranking by whether its method is published and whether it tells you what a firm does badly. Our methodology explains how our ranking is computed, and every firm page shows the rules and price in full. Side-by-side pages on compare put two firms’ terms next to each other.
Matching rules to your trading style
Most of the fit comes down to a few rules, and each trading style cares about different ones:
- Scalpers need low commissions and tight spreads or cheap micros, and must check any minimum hold time rule.
- Intraday traders can live with a daily flat rule, and prefer an end-of-day over an intraday trailing drawdown.
- Swing traders need overnight and weekend holding, no daily flat rule, and ideally a static drawdown.
- News traders need a firm that allows trading around high-impact releases — many restrict it.
- Algorithmic traders need a firm that allows expert advisors and a platform that runs them.
FAQs — How to choose a prop firm
Updated 2026-09-24. Sources are linked where each claim is made.
What is the best prop firm for beginners?
One with forgiving rules: a static or end-of-day drawdown, no time limit, a small low-cost account and clear payout terms. The best firm is the one whose rules fit your strategy.
Which prop firm has the least rules?
All firms enforce loss limits. Some drop consistency rules, minimum days, and news or weekend restrictions, usually in exchange for a tighter drawdown or higher price.
Which platform is best for prop firm trading?
The one you already know, provided the firm offers it. Futures firms mostly use Tradovate, NinjaTrader, Rithmic and ProjectX; forex firms mostly MT5, cTrader and TradeLocker.
Is the cheapest prop firm the best choice?
Not necessarily. Compare total cost to a first payout, including activation and reset fees, against how likely you are to pass under that firm’s rules.
Should I choose a prop firm by its profit split?
Only after the rules. A 90% split on an account you cannot keep pays less than 80% on one that suits your strategy.
How many prop firms should I compare?
Enough to find three or four that pass the market, country, platform and drawdown checks, then compare those on total cost and payout terms side by side.
Is a newer prop firm worth trying?
A new firm may have attractive rules and prices, but no payout record yet. If you try one, keep the account small and withdraw at the first opportunity.

A proprietary trading firm, also known as a prop firm, is a company that provides traders with access to funded trading accounts. Most prop firms require traders to pass an evaluation or challenge that tests consistency, risk management, and profitability before granting a funded account.
